Those who like to collect WW II military watches would be familiar with West End Watch Company. This company had been importing hand-winding watches manufactured by Longines to Asia, especially for British India’s civil service as well as military personnel in the Far East.
See the following examples:

Note that these watches traded by West End Watch Co. bear the name of West End on watch dial and logo of the company (a David Star shape) with serial number on watch case-back.
Many versions are made in such arrangement accordingly. However, most of these West End watches produced with Longines movement are not truly military spec. watches.

Those were made specially for military personnel should have either one (or both) symbols on the watch.  e.g. The broad arrow on watch dial and or the WWW (wristwatch, waterproof, watch) on the case-back.
See the example as follow:

The above example was produced for British air force pilots.  Interestingly, on its dial signed LONGINES but its steel case-back there’s the West End Watch Co. logo as well but with the inscription – EVERBRIGHT. (reason ?).  This example is produced circa 1940s. It remains a very rare piece of WW II military watch collection in superb condition.

(1)   Special Modification – Rolex Submariner

Shown here is a fashionable black Rolex from a firm called Pro-Hunter. The specialist watch firm was started by Reza Rashidian who specialized in using Diamond-like carbon (DLC) finish for after-market Rolex refurbishing. Such mod would turn a Rolex Submariner into highly sought after collectible black watch which cost double the price of an original Submariner.
However, any form of modifications on Rolex watches would result in the void of warranty by Rolex.

ROLEX OYSTER QUARTZ –  ONE OF ITS KIND

Shown here is the only Quartz movement Rolex model (this piece in 18K gold and steel) produced by Rolex in its watch-making history, this Oysterquartz was produced and sold in the 1980s – 1990s period.

Rolex Co. had promissed its customers who own one of this rare Oyster Quartz wrist watch, a life-time replacement of watch battery for free!

Additional information:

The Rolex Oysterquartz is a special watch in the line of Rolex wristwatches because it features a quartz movement unlike the mechanical movements found in the rest of Rolex watches. This watch is indeed a unique feature of the Rolex profile as the company was never interested in making quartz watches. However, the increasing demand for these watches made Rolex participate in the making of reliable quartz movements. Total production of Oyster Quartz comprises only 2 % of the overall production of Rolex watches. Though it is out of production since 2001, the Oyster Quartz model remains special in Rolex’s history.

In the 1980 – 90s Tudor (Rolex’s sub brand) introduced a series of diving watches branded as Mini-Submariner with smaller dimeter (at approx. 33mm) but every bit a Rolex Submariner in look and quality.  The Mini Sub adapts to 200m diving depth.

The watch shown here is from the batch of “369B” production series of Mini Sub by Tudor, in that it commands a better market value.

ABOUT ZENO “Explorer” WATCH WITH DIFFERENT VERSIONS

Commentary sent via Forums.watchuseek.com

(questions by Quorum),

Hello,

I’m looking at buying one of the Zeno Explorers (now discontinued). AFAICT from some Googling, there were three versions of this watch:

– “Zeno Watch” branded with Miyota automatic movement
– “Zeno Watch” branded with ETA automatic movement
– “Zeno USA” branded with Miyota automatic movement

It seems like there are a lot of people who don’t like Zeno USA, and on one forum I saw their watches described as “basically fake Zeno watches.” Many people also assert that they have no relation to the Swiss Zeno. However, looking at the Zeno Watch website, Zeno USA is clearly listed as the authorized US distributor.

There is also this blog entry which claims that the “Zeno USA” explorer was produced for the US Army(!), which seems exceedingly unlikely: Zeno-USA & Zeno-Watch (Explorer) « i Love Watches

I would appreciate any light that anyone could shed on the situation.

Thank you.

ZENO-USA

ZENO with Jap movement, specially produced limited edition for Honk Kong market

Editor’s Remarks:

This model of Zeno watch is rather special because of its design. It follows the essence of original Rolex Explorer which has huge market following. It is not surprising that Zeno has taklen the cue and started to produce several versions on request for different market demands.  Such as the ZENO-Miyota with Japanese movement that was mainly produced for Hong Kong market because the collectors there just simply love the 3, 6, 9 hour markers which means Longivity & Luck. Observe that its 3, 6, 9 markers are embossed, different from the ZENO-USA’s.

Whether the ZENO-USA was truly made for the US Army is another matter. It is definitely based on preferences of US market for such a military-style watch dial design that comes with bubble glass top!

Regardless of whether it is a ZENO-USA or ZENO-Miyota (Jap movement) or ETA version, this is a great model produced by Zeno Watch Co.  It conforms to a minimalist style of design philosophy in watch-making that indulges in utility functional. Those who still can get one of these, do it NOW!

True To It’s Spirit –  The Mickey Watch automatic mech

One guy shares the pictures of his automatic movement “Mickey” he bought a couple of years ago, on the 50th anniversary of Mickey Mouse cartoon character.

The design of the watch dial sticks to original cartoon image with its two arms moving around clock-wise as watch hour and minute hands.  The dial signed by Disney an indication of authoried product.

2nd April 2012

There are many divers watch versions produced by Seiko over the years.

Two most popular model types are the Monster and Tuna series.  Tuna series of divers watches are mainly more high-end equipment ranging from 200m – 1000m.  The Monster series are mainly 200m depth rating.

Seiko in 2008 produced the “in-between” model nick-named the Franken Tuna, with 200m rating. Both the Monster and Franken Tuna are equiped with automatic winding mechanism.  Monster is using the long-lasting 7S26 work horse mechansm and, Franken Tuna using the newest 7S36 equally tough work horse automatic.
